Tesla was the best-selling brand of electric vehicles in Germany through the first nine months of this year, taking the crown from VW.
In the January-September period, a total of 38,458 new Tesla models were registered throughout Germany. This represents a jump of almost 50 per cent from the same period in 2020. VW hasn’t enjoyed quite the same success of its EV models this year, with sales falling by 40 per cent to a touch over 32,236 units, Auto News reports.
There were some VW Group brands that had a little more success. For example, both Audi and Seat increased sales of their EVs in Germany in the first nine months of the year and while the VW Group’s EV sales slowed in Germany, they have been on the rise globally. Indeed, its total deliveries of EVs are up 25 per cent in January-September from a year earlier.

Overall VW Group sales have fallen 13 per cent this year when including combustion engine, hybrid, and all-electric models. This is due in part to supply chain bottlenecks, as well as rising inflation and energy costs that have limited demand, especially throughout Europe.
“The tense situation of component supply has repeatedly led to adjustments in production. We expect a stabilization of supply over the course of the coming year,” a VW spokesperson said.
Word of Tesla’s success in Germany this year comes just a few days after it was announced that the Model Y was the nation’s best-selling vehicle in September. A total of 9,848 examples of the Model Y were delivered in Germany last month, beating the Volkswagen Golf that saw a touch over 7,000 examples reach customers.
